I am pleased to announce the launch of the GAITL Phase 2 Committee, charged with translating our recently released Generative AI in Teaching and Learning (GAITL) report into resources for our campus ahead of the fall semester.
As I noted in my July 7 message following the publication of the report, the rapid evolution of GenAI technologies requires thoughtful frameworks that support our educators and protect the integrity of a Brown education. The reconstituted and expanded GAITL Phase 2 Committee is charged with responding to the report’s first near-term recommendation: “publish university-wide baseline rules for GenAI while departments/programs develop and publish standards for their areas.” As articulated in the charge, the members of the committee will work together with our community to deliberately and intentionally identify solutions that align with Brown’s values and commitment to academic excellence.

The committee is working through an accelerated summer schedule to ensure our instructors have concrete resources in advance of the upcoming academic year. I have specifically asked the GAITL Phase 2 Committee to deliver adaptable AI policy examples for course syllabi; these examples will be hosted on the Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning website no later than August 18 as a resource for instructors to consider adopting or adapting for their fall courses.
These AI policy examples and an interactive policy exploration tool will serve as the basis for collaborative discussions with the Brown community throughout the fall semester, where faculty, students and staff will be invited to share feedback on the report and its recommendations; provide input on resources they are seeking from the University related to GenAI; and engage with committee members in discussion about whether the University should adopt an institution-wide default policy on GenAI use in educational settings and what shape such a policy might take. I expect the committee to share more information about its community engagement plans early in the semester.
I am grateful to Michael Littman, associate provost for artificial intelligence and university professor of computer science, who has agreed to continue his leadership as chair of this committee; to Eric Kaldor, director of assessment and transformational programs at the Sheridan Center, for co-leading the committee as the AI policy examples were developed; and to Ravit Reichman, associate professor of English, who has agreed to step in as co-chair.
