Following the foundational work of the Generative AI in Teaching and Learning (GAITL) Committee, the University is moving to the operational phase of the report’s near-term recommendations.

The GAITL Committee report explicitly notes that members of the Brown community need to have a common understanding of what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable uses of Generative AI (GenAI) in teaching and learning contexts, including coursework and theses and dissertations. To address current ambiguity while respecting faculty disciplinary expertise and autonomy, the provost has convened a reconstituted and expanded committee: GAITL Phase 2.

The GAITL Phase 2 Committee is charged with responding to the report's first major recommendation: develop a framework for a university-wide baseline policy regarding GenAI use in teaching and learning. Addressing this recommendation requires that the GAITL Phase 2 Committee works together with our community to deliberately and intentionally identify solutions that align with Brown’s values and commitment to academic excellence. 

Charge to the Committee

The committee will:

• Develop a range of proposed AI policy templates for use in course syllabi to be shared with the community as a resource for the 2026-27 academic year. 
• Vary the templates to give faculty a broad range of GenAI policy options that they may choose to adopt or adapt into their syllabi for the Fall 2026 semester.
• Engage in a robust community engagement process in the Fall 2026 semester to hear from faculty, staff and students about how best to meet the needs of Brown’s teachers and learners in the face of the realities of GenAI adoption at Brown (as reported in the July 2026 GAITL Committee report).
• Develop a process of engagement that includes feedback on the templates and assess how they work to support educators and learners and protect the integrity of a Brown education in the face of rapidly evolving GenAI technologies.

The Office of the Provost will publish approved templates by August 18, 2026, ahead of the beginning of the fall semester.

Key Deliverables

The GAITL Phase 2 Committee will prepare resources across the following areas:

1. Syllabus Templates

• Deliverable: Drafts of a comprehensive range of distinct GenAI course policy templates representing various levels of classroom integration and restriction, ranging from “no AI” to full integration.
• Deliverable: A roadmap for coordinating with the Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning to host on their website the adaptable templates that are ultimately approved, ensuring they are easily accessible for instructors preparing fall syllabi.

2. Framework for Fall Community Engagement

• Deliverable: An outline of the parameters for the fall 2026 university-wide engagement process regarding both the templates and the remaining recommendations in the “Generative AI in Teaching and Learning (GAITL)  Committee Final Report  and Recommendations.” This framework must ensure that faculty, student and staff perspectives are all captured to evaluate if, and how, an official institution-wide default policy should be pursued.

Timeline

Because instructors require sufficient time to adapt their courses and learning activities ahead of the Fall 2026 semester, the committee will operate on an accelerated summer timeline:

• Early August 2026: GAITL Phase 2 submits its policy templates and related resources to the provost. 
• August 18, 2026: The provost releases approved policy templates and related resources to be shared with faculty ahead of the fall semester.
• August 18, 2026: AI policy templates posted on Sheridan Center website.
• Fall 2026: Templates will serve as the basis for collaborative discussions with the Brown community, including discussion about whether the University should adopt an institution-wide baseline policy on GenAI use in educational settings and what shape such a policy might take.
