About the Office of the Provost

The provost serves as the University’s chief academic officer and chief budget officer, working closely with the president to advance the University’s mission of teaching, research and service.

The provost is responsible for ensuring academic excellence and sound budgetary practices across the full range of programs in Brown’s academic departments, research centers and interdisciplinary institutes, as well as within the University library system. The provost also oversees the operations of major academic offices and schools, including:

  • the College;
  • the Dean of the Faculty;
  • the Graduate School;
  • the School of Engineering;
  • the School of Professional Studies; 
  • the School of Public Health;
  • The Thomas J. Watson School of International and Public Affairs; and
  • The Warren Alpert Medical School.
An accomplished engineer and academic leader, Francis “Frank” J. Doyle III has served as Brown University’s 14th provost since July 2023.
The team of senior academic administrators reporting to the provost works closely with academic and administrative partners across the University to support and steward innovative teaching for Brown students and groundbreaking research that advances knowledge, propels discovery, and serves the community, the nation and the world.
Staff members in the Office of the Provost provide analysis, communications, project management and administrative support that enables and advances the provost’s work across the University.
