In alignment with Brown’s strategic plan, Building on Distinction, the Operational Plan for Investing in Research is the detailed roadmap for propelling Brown’s research and scholarship to a new level of excellence.
The research Brown produces plays a critical role in benefiting communities locally, nationally and around the world. With increased investment in research across all disciplines — in areas ranging from treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and unraveling the mysteries of RNA, to confronting social and economic inequality, addressing climate challenges, and deepening our understanding of the historical and cultural legacies that shape current issues — Brown stands ready to make a transformative impact on the lives of individuals, families and society.
In Fall 2020, President Christina H. Paxson convened the ad hoc Committee on Promoting Financial Health and Sustainability, appointing Provost Richard M. Locke as chair and membership that included staff, faculty and students. President Paxson charged the committee with developing recommendations to promote the long-term financial health and sustainability of the University.
In October 2021, the committee released its final report, which sets forth a summary of the context that informed the committee's work as well as the committee's charge, the process by which the committee conducted its work and the committee's overall recommendations for consideration.
October 2018 marks the mid-point of implementing Building on Distinction, the University’s strategic plan. Given this milestone, and the substantial progress made since the plan’s inception, Provost Locke devoted much of the summer of 2018 working with academic and administrative colleagues to review, reconsider and refine the Operational Plan for Building Brown’s Excellence, which outlines the concrete steps and concomitant resources needed to achieve our vision and aspirations.

Brown’s commitment to diversity is highlighted in Brown’s strategic plan, Building on Distinction. The detailed vision for realizing this commitment is articulated in Pathways to Diversity and Inclusion: An Action Plan for Brown University, which outlines a set of concrete, achievable actions to make Brown a more fully diverse and inclusive community.
