Dean of the Faculty

The Office of the Dean of the Faculty is responsible for the recruitment, retention and development of faculty in the divisions of the physical and life sciences, the humanities and the social sciences, working also with deans of other academic divisions and programs across Brown. The Dean of the Faculty is responsible for managing academic policies and procedures and for setting standards of conduct.

The Brown University Handbook of Academic Administration describes the practical application of rules and policies governing the faculty, including policies related to hiring, appointments, review and tenure.

Office of BioMed Faculty Administration

BMFA facilitates the recruitment, appointment, retention, and promotion of faculty members across four campus-based departments, 14 clinical departments, and two hybrid departments in seven hospitals.

Office of Faculty Affairs (SPH)

The Office of Faculty Affairs in the School of Public Health (SPH) oversees recruitment, appointments and promotions, sabbatical leaves and annual reviews; partners with several offices at Brown on issues related to mentoring, professional development, diversity and governance; and manages faculty data and related reporting within and outside of Brown as needed.

Phased Retirement Options [PDF]

Full-time tenured faculty members over the age of 62 may choose to phase out of full-time work by voluntarily reducing their effort to half-time for a limited period, followed by retirement.

Awarding of Emeritus/Emerita Appointments Policy

This policy documents and defines the principles and policies by which emeritus/emerita appointments are made by the Corporation of Brown University to eligible members of the faculty and senior administration.

Division of Research
